Customer case study
Pius X College in Bladel uses DST Connect digital signage software, set up together with our partner GISB, to show live timetable changes, news and school communication on screens throughout the building. Thanks to the Zermelo integration, nobody has to retype a thing.
On a school day, information changes constantly: a lesson is cancelled, a classroom changes, a parent evening or test week is coming up. Students and staff only need to know one thing: what is on my schedule today and where do I have to be? What is on the screen has to be correct, and it has to be clear within a few seconds.
Pius X College knew exactly what it wanted to show on its screens. The question was how to organize that technically: which information goes on which screen, how do you connect it to the systems the school already uses, and how do you make every screen look like the school?
Together with GISB Audiovisueel, our partner for audiovisual solutions, Pius X College chose DST Connect as the digital signage CMS behind all screens. GISB advises, sets up the integrations and takes care of installation, management and support. DST Connect is the software that controls the content on every screen from one central place.
The approach does not start with hanging a screen, but with the information that has to be on it. Which information do students and staff need? Which classes walk past which screen? What belongs at the entrance and what only in the staff room? That was agreed with the school first, after which GISB and the DST Connect team set it all up.
At Pius X, DST Connect pulls timetables and timetable changes straight from Zermelo. If a lesson is cancelled or a classroom changes, it is shown on the right screen automatically. Nobody has to retype that information. The same integration can also be linked to WebUntis or Xedule.
Not every screen has to show the same thing. Per screen, we filter on the right classes and departments, so a screen only shows what is relevant for the students walking past it. Other information can be included automatically too, such as activities, parent evenings or test weeks from the school calendar.
Showing the right information is not enough, it also has to be clear. A student looks at a screen for only a few seconds, so what matters has to stand out immediately. That is why every screen is set up, together with the team behind DST Connect, fully in the school’s house style: colors, fonts, logos and the layout of the information all match.
Every screen can have a different function, from timetables and news items to the weather and the canteen offering, but together they look like one whole. Those templates are built on the school’s brand identity from the start.
Not everything has to come from another system. Sometimes you just want to share something yourself, such as an announcement or an activity. Staff can do that from their own laptop. In the DST Connect platform, templates are ready for them, so nobody has to design anything: they only add the content and decide when the message is shown.
With user permissions, different departments manage their own information, without everyone having access to everything and without the screens getting a different look. Once everything is running, GISB makes sure the screens switch on and off automatically, that the players and software stay up to date and that the integrations keep working. “We knew what we wanted to show on the screens, but not how to get it done technically. GISB helped us with the setup, the connection with various systems here at school and the design in our own house style. A lot happens automatically, which is great.”
